Daruharidra [Botanical name- Berberis aristata] also known as Indian barberry or tree turmeric is a shrub belonging to the genus Berberis. The genus comprises approximately 450-500 species of deciduous evergreen shrubs and is found in the temperate and sub-tropical regions of Asia, Europe, and America. In Ayurvedic texts Daruharidra is mentioned to be useful as bitter tonic, digestive, pacifies liver & spleen swelling, as fever reducing agent, improves blood circulation and supports skin health. Ayurveda says the qualities and medicinal uses of Daruharidra are very similar to turmeric. In Modern world Daruharidra is successfully used for promoting relief from urine infections, intermittent fevers, periodic nerve pain and controlling blood sugar. Daruharidra supports relief from infections of upper respiratory tract especially eyes, ears and mouth. Daruharidra may be also useful for heavy menses and white discharge issues in ladies.
